Thinking about purchasing Mango Tango: Pink Waistbeads? Read more about waistbeads below.

The internet (namely social media) makes the world really small and — ironically — really forgetful. This is why I am not surprised nor do I get excited when I receive a “ What do I use these for?” message instantly after many of my customers purchase their beautiful, hand-crafted body jewelry. I’ve slowly accepted that with rapid, shorthanded sharing via the interwebs comes the watering down of rich traditions. I, probably more than anyone I know, love the seemingly sudden interest in waistbeads. However, I urge anyone interested in making or commissioning a set to take their education into their own hands and ask as many questions as possible. Keep reading to learn how and why African women and girls wear their waistbeads.

There is nothing new under the sun; especially meaningfully adorning our bodies. That is why when people refer to or dismiss waistbeads as a “fad” or a “trend” I cringe a little. With origins in West Africa, waistbeads have been worn by African girls and women for centuries. With the emergence of the internet, more specifically social media, people all over the world have shared in the Pan-African tradition of making and trading waist beads. As a Black touch healer and visual artist, I feel it is extremely important to continue both the tradition and education around the sacred practice of exchanging HAND MADE waist beads. There are various uses for waistbeads and I am honored to have been commissioned by over 2,000 unique clients to craft, conjure and customize a set for almost every cause and occasion.

Size Chart

Use a measuring tape or a string. Do not use manufacturer clothing sizes as a gauge for your waist size.
  • Measure yourself on bare skin. Do not wrap your tape or string over your clothing (unless you plan on wearing them over your clothing).
  • Wrap snugly. But, not too tight.
  • Don’t suck in your stomach. Your size is your size. And that is perfect, mama! You want your beads to fit and you want them to last.
  • Typically, you should measure right below your belly button. If you have a belly, measure underneath it. Measure lower or higher, you should measure to accommodate that preference.
  • If you will be wearing your waist beads to help you lose or gain weight, measure on your belly. As you lose weight, they will fall. As you gain weight, they will stretch.
